The unrest that has now come to represent Southport to the world forms a painful betrayal of the many decent local people whose unfaltering kindness and care has been shuffled out of view.
Another sterling effort, Caroline... I read, transfixed, your description of Southport as it has historically been. I could even picture it in my mind's eye.
Likewise, with less equanimity, I read your description of the current situation (that is, of last year). Are things still more or less the same?
Southport sounds like the kind of place where I would enjoy living, and your affection for it shows through in every paragraph you wrote.
Pieces like yours on Southport are bittersweet for me. On the one hand, I'm warmed by the "small-townishness" (is that really a word?). On the other hand, as in The Lord of the Rings, I see signs of a darkness encroaching---a social darkness, but darkness nonetheless.
I truly hope things are better in Southport now. There's no going back to the way things were... but one can hope that it's not losing any more ground.
Keep writing good stuff like this... 😉 BILL (Harley)
The destruction of Christianity, which I enthusiastically participated in as a young man, is the root of many of our problems. Christianity have or society its glue. I cannot be religious, and this is an inconvenience for me, but a disaster for society.
