Chantelle Mouffe was perhaps the first to observe the conflict between the right-leaning concept of nation and the supra-national order supported by the left. When this order was human rights, I found myself balanced in the middle. As the global order has swung violently towards imperial technocracy, I (like many on the left) find myself politically homeless.
Thus the issues surrounding citizens, nations, and demos has been troubling me greatly for some time. It was not that long ago that resistance on the political left in the United States was based around a shared vision of what that nation represented... now, it is hard to find any trace of principles in what is advocated.
